So Why Secondhand?

Hey Friends,

My mom is the Queen of Thrifting. I grew up in the late 90's/ early 2000's, when all the rage in clothing was Aeropastale, Hollister and Abercrombie. I needed to have these clothes, it was crucial for my social survival! However, with 5 kids, you can bet my Mom wasn't about to go out and buy all new clothes from these ridiculously over priced retail stores. Instead, the Queen went out and brought me home my survival kit from thrift stores. As far as I could tell, it made no difference where the clothes were bought, since the name was slapped on the front in bold letters. Now that I'm older, I've embraced my birthright as being the next Queen, but I thrift for a different reason other than social survival.

Did you know that the average American threw away 81 pounds of clothing last year alone? It's true, we've become such a wasteful people. 95% of that clothing could be reused or recycled.  Now, before you go thinking I'm going to shove being Green in your face, hear me out. I'm not the most 'green' individual, and more often than not, I think..."gee, we should really solve world hunger issues before fixing climate change." Perhaps my priorities are a little different than yours, but I will say this, buying secondhand is good for everyone for these 3 reasons:

1. Choosing to shop secondhand helps divert more than 700 million goods from landfills each year
2. Buying from secondhand stores, provides stable source of revenue for more than 120 local charitable organizations
3. Shopping secondhand saves YOU 70-90% on gently used clothing, household goods and accessories

Buying secondhand is beneficial to your wallet, the community and your planet, what other reasons do you need to start? Join the thrifting culture and begin your adventure of sustainability through second hand shopping.
